At Aves Coffee Co., we are dedicated to delivering the best coffee experience, from sourcing premium beans to expert roasting. Transparency is important to us, and we want to share the challenges impacting our industry.
Global coffee prices have surged due to climate change, supply chain disruptions, and rising import costs. Since our last price adjustment in March 2023, we’ve absorbed these increases, but to maintain quality and sustainability, we must adjust our coffee bean prices starting March 2025.
We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we navigate these changes together. We want to provide you with a comprehensive overview of these developments and how they affect our business.
A Look at Coffee Prices Over the Last 10 Years
Arabica coffee it is the world benchmark for coffee futures contracts that trade on the Inter Continental Exchange (ICE). Arabica accounts for 75% of the world’s production and is mostly cultivated in Brazil (40% of the world’s total supply) and Colombia.
Coffee prices remain supported by short supplies, with further tightening expected due to smaller arabica crop projections in Brazil for the 2025-26 season. Additionally, Cecafe on February 12 reported that Brazil's January green coffee exports fell 1.6% y/y to 3.98 million bags.
To put things into perspective, here’s how coffee prices have changed over the past decade:
(Source: tradingeconomics.com)
Key Takeaways from This Data:
- In 2015, the price of Arabica coffee was around US$1.20 per pound.
- By 2021, prices had already risen to US$1.77 per pound due to early supply chain disruptions.
- In 2025, we saw a dramatic spike, reaching $4.23per pound, making it the highest price in over a decade.
Why Are Green Coffee Bean Prices Increasing?
1. Climate Change and Extreme Weather
Coffee is a crop that thrives in very specific climate conditions. Unfortunately, major coffee-producing countries are struggling with severe weather changes:
- Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer, is experiencing its most severe drought in over seven decades. This has drastically reduced coffee yields and raised concerns about future harvests
- Vietnam, a major producer of Robusta coffee, has experienced heavy rains and flooding, affecting coffee plantations.
- Colombia, known for its high-quality Arabica beans, has had unpredictable weather, leading to lower production.
With less coffee being produced, the global supply is shrinking, which drives up prices.
2. Supply Chain and Economic Challenges
Even beyond climate issues, the cost of moving coffee from farms to roasters has risen sharply:
- Increased Trading Costs: Coffee prices on the global market have surged, with the ICE (Intercontinental Exchange) increasing margins by 10% to $10,410 per arabica contract, making it more expensive for traders and importers. Nearly double levels a year ago
- Global Demand: Coffee consumption is growing worldwide, especially in emerging markets, creating higher demand despite supply shortages.
3. The Rising Cost of Importing Coffee to Canada
Bringing coffee beans into Canada is more complex than just ordering a shipment. We must navigate import regulations, licensing requirements, and rising freight costs. The Canadian dollar’s fluctuations against the U.S. dollar also impact the cost of imports.
All of these factors add up, making it harder for businesses like ours to keep prices stable while maintaining quality.
What This Means for Aves Coffee Co. Customers
Since our last price adjustment in March 2023, we have absorbed these increasing costs to keep your coffee prices unchanged. However, with green coffee bean prices at an all-time high, it is no longer sustainable for us to maintain the same pricing. Starting March 2025, we will be implementing a necessary price increase on our coffee beans.
New Pricing Effective March 2025
To continue sourcing premium coffee and maintaining the quality you expect, we will be making a necessary price adjustment across our all coffee beans.
We understand that price increases are never easy, and we want to assure you that this decision was not made lightly. Our goal is to remain transparent and continue providing the best coffee possible while supporting sustainable and ethical sourcing practices.
